Emilia initially began training in, making and performing alongside an exceptional group of young artists, after being selected to become a member of Hertfordshire Youth Dance Company. They worked with nationally and internationally renowned choreographers and competed both regionally and nationally. The company opened for Hofesh Shechter’s Company at Big Dance in 2008. With previous training in Ballet, Street Dance and Musical Theatre, Emilia began teaching and assisting at multiple local dance schools in Hertfordshire before commencing professional training and academic studies in contemporary dance.
Emilia graduated in 2014 from Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL) with a Distinction in MA Contemporary Performance Practices, after most gratefully receiving a fully funded studentship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and in 2012 from De Montfort University, Leicester with a First Class BA Honours Degree in Dance. With thanks to Dance Research Studio, two bursaries have enabled Emilia to participate on the professional development programmes The Speaking Dancer: Interdisciplinary Performance Training (SDIPT) (2013-14) and The Interdisciplinary Performer (TIP) course (2014), both directed by Jacky Lansely. Emilia was also offered a place on the postgraduate certificate course Physical Theatre for Dancers and Actors with Jasmin Vardimon Company and RHUL. During 2013-14, Emilia was part of the third and final year of the Young Arts Entrepreneurs scheme at Curve Theatre, Leicester where she was supported, trained, mentored and funded to develop her creative business as an Independent Dance Artist. Emilia has previously been mentored by choreographer and performance artist Jacky Lansley, choreographer and community practitoner Fergus Early and dance artist Louise Katerega, with the support of Performing Arts Leicester and the sponsorship of Dance4.
Emilia has trained through a variety of workshops and classes with practitioners such as Donald Edwards, Aakash Odedra, Angharad Harrop, Sally Doughty, Kerry Francksen, Pete Shenton, Tom Roden, Jacky Lansley, Fergus Early, Anna Furse, Rose English, Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company and Mark Lorimer. Emilia has taken classes with internationally renowned practitioners such as Laura Aris and Sandy Williams (Rosas) at P.A.R.T.S, founded by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, in Brussels during the final audition for the Research Cycle in 2012, where she was honoured to be the final female candidate left from the UK.
Later that year, Emilia participated in a five-day residency with Jorge Crecis (Spain), which resulted in performing in the opening piece for his company somoSQuien. After winning a place through IdeasTap, Emilia took part in a residency and co-hosted a discussion forum with Rosie Kay at mac, Birmingham. In 2013, Emilia was invited to exchange with Gary Clarke during his residency at Dance4, Nottingham, also with choreographers Robert Clark, Abi Mortimer and Gavin Coward. In December 2013, Emilia was invited to take part in Emilyn Claid’s Research Lab 'Falling About', as part of WinLab Festival at Siobhan Davies Studios, London. In April 2014, Emilia was selected to attend BIDE: Barcelona International Dance Exchange to collaborate and perform with sixty international artists, she received a Royal Holloway Travel Award for this trip to carry out research into methods of creative exchange.
Emilia’s independent and collaborative work has been performed at Moving Out, Summer Dancing Festival (Coventry), Signatures, Let’s Dance International Festival (Leicester), Park In Progress Residency, World Event Young Artists (Nottingham), Unearth Festival (Leicester), Newvolutions (Lincoln), Simply For Screen (Leicester), Cultural Exchanges Festival (Leicester), University Dance Festival at Curve Theatre (Leicester) and Dance Lunch Bites at Embrace Arts (Leicester). Emilia recently facilitated a performance project and creative exchange for seven interdisciplinary upcoming artists at Curve Theatre (Leicester) named A Closer Look, supported by Curve Young Arts Entrepreneurs Project, made possible by funding from The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The Esmèe Fairbairn Foundation. Emilia is currently developing a new interdisciplinary work in collaboration with Sara Ismail, a theatre-maker from Egypt, as part of the Artist Residency Programme at Dance Research Studio in London, supported by Arts Council England.
Emilia is currently teaching the course in Dance Technique and Composition, as part of the BA Honours Drama and Dance programme at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she is a Visiting Lecturer. Emilia is soon to become a Part-Time Lecturer at De Montfort University, teaching towards the module Understanding Dance, as part of the BA Honours Dance programme. She has previously assisted the teaching of classes at De Montfort University, for second year undergraduates studying contact improvisation and third year students studying improvisation, yoga and technique within dance practice. Emilia has also taught classes for DanceDigital’s Hertfordshire County Youth Dance Company, InPulse and the Junior Dance Company, Shift:West. Emilia has previously been a Guest Dance Artist at Beaumont School in Hertfordshire, teaching year eleven BTEC dance students technical and creative classes, as well as a Boys Dance project. Emilia has also taught a range of classes and workshops for creative dance company, Moving Together with Bronze and Silver Arts Award students, as well as community classes for Women Today and Over 55′s at Curve Theatre, Leicester.
